RTA-Yhtiöt is a small engineering company that over the years grew into a major infrastructure and general contractor. It is a company that knows the value of strong roots, family values and a down-to-earth approach. We have well over a half-century’s experience as a contractor for earthworks and maintenance.
RTA today
Our family business continues under the leadership of a new generation. We are a medium-sized operator in the civil engineering sector, growing in a targeted and controlled way under the common name of RTA.
Shoulder to the wheel, eyes ahead
Although earthworks is still the core of our operations, we are now working on an increasing number of projects involving the construction of demanding structures. Our projects have grown into project sites where precise project management is essential for a successful project. In reappraising our values, we identified punctuality as the most important value. This means starting work on time, managing the overall project and adhering to schedules according to the customer’s requirements and to the greatest possible extent. We ensure high-quality and comprehensive construction and maintenance services for developers and customers in collaboration with a wide network of subcontractors.

With our staff and our extensive subcontracting network, we carry out meaningful and responsible work as a Finnish construction contractor. We understand and embrace our responsibility in supporting sustainable development through lifecycle construction. Because our livelihood comes from the earth, the wellbeing of the environment and climate is particularly important to us. We use modern, low-emission equipment wherever possible, and continuously improve our operations to ensure that the reuse of soil and materials remains efficient and compliant with environmental regulations. We put safety first and ensure the financial success of our projects every day.

An open and proactive working culture
RTA-Yhtiöt has always adapted to changes in the construction market and customer needs. In an open working community, initiatives, ideas and development proposals are generated every day, and we invest resources and time in further developing them. We also come up with plenty of ideas for the good of our customers. Changing conditions on construction sites have made us highly practical problem-solvers. While we continue to focus on our core expertise, we are also open to new business opportunities in the construction sector.
The history of RTA
Maarakennus Raimo T.A. Virtanen and Maanrakennus Rasimus are an important part of our history since its beginnings over 50 years ago.
1968
The foundations of our company are firmly set in Finnish soil. Raimo T.A. Virtanen, the founder of RTA-Yhtiöt, started his business as a one-machine entrepreneur in 1968. Winter maintenance work was carried out in Hyvinkää with a Massey Ferguson
The company began cable construction in the 1970s and focused on district heating construction in Hyvinkää and Riihimäki. Raimo’s main rivals in the machine shop were 43 electric utility company shovellers.
1988
Over the years, Raimo developed his business from an individual proprietorship to a limited partnership company, and then to a limited liability company in 1988. The marketing name RTA-Yhtiöt was introduced in the same year, and the business was expanded through acquisitions to transport and contracting in southern Finland. Raimo’s brother Reijo joined the business development, and the current premises were built at Kerkkolankatu 28.
1990-luku
In the 1990s, Finland and RTA-Yhtiöt were affected by the severe recession. Although these tough times were hard on some parts of the business, they also gave rise to new ones.
Verkonrakentaja Wire was founded in 1991 with the Paloheimo electric power plant and the companies of Raimo and Reijo Virtanen. RTA-YHTIÖT set out to develop cable construction operations in partnership.
The earthworks operator Maarakennus Rasimus was bought by RTA-YHTIÖT in 1992. Maarakennus Rasimus and Maarakennusliike Raimo T.A Virtanen have been working closely together for years. Among their joint projects was a district heat transmission line from Riihimäki to Hyvinkää.
2000-luku
Raimo T.A. Virtanen and Helena Virtanen celebrated 40 years of entrepreneurship in 2008. Sadly, one of the founding partners died in 2010, and the other the following year. The second generation took over in 2012. Päivi Virtanen, Nina Lindström and Harri Virtanen continue to run the business together, on the principle of continuous development. RTA-YHTIÖT divested its ownership of Verkonrakentaja Wire in 2014.
2017
The company strengthens its footing. As a result of close collaboration, Maarakennusliike Raimo T.A Virtanen and Maarakennus Rasimus merged on 1 March 2017 to form a new company, RTA-YHTIÖT.
